Umbies are one of the largest new world cichlids, with males attaining mature lengths of 20 inches or more. Also known as the Blue-freckled Cichlid, or Turquiose Cichlid, the color of this fish can be quite stunning. These fish are not a friendly species, and are best housed in a species tank. They require alot of space to accomodate their size and temperament, so look at housing a pair in a tank of at least 100 gallons or larger. Umbies are avid carnivores, and will enjoy a meaty diet including a staple pellet or stick formula, as well as frozen, freeze-dried, or live snacks.

The Cortez Angel gets its name from its native waters, the Sea of Cortez, Mexico. Juveniles are predominately black, with six striking gold stripes and narrow blue bands between them. The adult angel will be a gray coloration with two distinct yellow bands located at the front of the fish. The diet of large angels generally consists of meaty foods, algaes and marine sponge. Many frozen angel formulas and flakes may have extra sponge meal, and live sponges can be purchased to supplement their diet. These angels are not reef safe, and have been known to nip at or eat some corals, sponges, and clam mantles. Like other angels, this species should not be kept with other large angels to avoid territorial conflicts. Occasionally, two angels may tolerate one another in a very large aquarium if they have very different coloration and appearance, but is not typically recommended.

Nimbochromis polystigma, formerly Haplochromis, is a Malawi mouthbrooder found throughout Lake Malawi. Though often labeled as a very aggressive fish, this may be exaggerated due to its large adult size, 10-12 inches, and fish diet. Regardless, they should not be housed with smaller or more docile cichlids. Polystigma has an impressive, brown leopard spot pattern as a juvenile. This coloration also adorns mature females for camouflage. Dominant males develop a blue-green and green-gold iridescent coloring, with yellow to red accents on the dorsal and anal fins. These fish are piscivores, meaning they eat other fish. They have been known to hunt in packs in the wild, but are successful predators independently as well. They have also been known to “play dead” to lure unsuspecting prey fish to a deadly fate. So, as mentioned previously, these fish should not be housed with fish that can be swallowed, but will need to be supplied with a meaty diet of cichlid pellets and supplemented with freeze-dried or frozen treats.

Metriaclima lombardoi were previously named Pseudotropheus. They originated around Mbenji Island and Nkhomo Reef in Lake Malawi. Female and juvenile Kenyi are blue with vertical black stripes, while males are yellow to orange, and bars may appear with mood. These Mbuna are rather aggressive and should only be kept with other cichlids that can take their rowdy behavior. Try to keep one male per 2-3 females, and do not mix similar males, especially in small tanks. Lots of rocks and caves should be created in the tank to help the fish establish territory and provide cover. Be sure to feed mbuna a diet rich in greens and vegetable matter, as they are herbivores, and cannot tolerate too much protein in their diet. 235148

Pseudotropheus saulosi is classified as a dwarf Mbuna, reaching a size of only 3-4 inches. These colorful little fish come originally from Lake Malawi. The males are blue with black vertical bars, and the mouthbrooding females are deep yellow. Fry are all yellow as well, changing colors at maturity. These cichlids are not terribly aggressive, but should be kept in harems to avoid dominant male aggression. Saulosi should only be housed with other Mbuna of similar size and aggression in tanks with plenty of space for all. There should be plenty of rock supplied for territory establishment. In the wild they feed primarily on algae, and that diet can be mimicked in the aquarium by feeding a spirulina based diet. Cichlid flakes and romaine lettuce will make a well rounded diet to supplement the spirulina.
